Our brains are the command centres of our bodies and just like our heart, lungs and other critical organs, it deserves to be a priority when it comes to our health.

What is Brain Health?

Your brain changes as you age. It's natural. But the central mission of your brain never changes. Its job is to help you make sense of the world and oversee your daily operations and life.

Brain health refers to the ability to remember, learn, plan, concentrate and maintain a clear, active mind, but it’s a whole lot more than that…. It's being able to draw on the strengths of your brain—information management, logic, judgment, perspective and wisdom.

Brain health is also a key part of your overall health. Our brains are involved in everything we do…. How we think, how we act and how we get along with other people. Our brain is the organ of intelligence, character, personality and forms a part of every single decision we make. When our brains work right, so do we …. And when our brains are troubled, we are much more likely to have trouble in our lives.

Why Brain Health?

With a healthy brain, we are happier, physically healthier (because we make better decisions), wealthier (also because we make better decisions) and more successful (depends on your definition of ‘success’). When our brains are unhealthy, for whatever reason (brain injuries, drug abuse, obesity, sleep apnea etc.), we tend to be sadder, sicker, poorer and less successful. By taking steps to help keep our brain and body healthy, we can enhance our lives now and help reduce risks to our brains as we age. What a great strategy for preventative health.

Up until now, we have been focused on our looks, our bodies, our relationships, our emotions and our intelligence (amongst other things). These are all great things to focus on, but how much of these attributes would benefit if we were to actually just focus on nurturing our brains? It’s a simple concept and is the main reason for valuing our brains in order to prioritise our health.

It’s time to show our brain some serious love. Our Brains really are Beautiful… and worth saving and since there is no cure on the horizon, PREVENTION, early diagnosis and intervention remain our most powerful allies.

My commitment to Brain Health has no doubt come about due to the challenges I have faced watching my mother battle dementia.
